Dental Implant Planning

Dental implant planning is the process of evaluating a patient’s oral structures and overall health to determine the safest, most effective placement of an artificial tooth root. It combines clinical examination, diagnostic imaging, and prosthetic assessment to analyze bone volume, anatomical landmarks, implant position, and the intended restoration before surgery. Digital workflows may integrate three-dimensional scans with virtual implant positioning and surgical guides, helping clinicians anticipate risks and coordinate treatment. Careful planning supports accurate placement, preservation of surrounding tissues, predictable function and esthetics, and appropriate management of conditions such as insufficient bone or complex anatomy.

Here, we present a protocol to evaluate oral biofilm formation on titanium and zirconia materials for dental prosthesis abutments, including the analysis of bacterial cells viability and morphological characteristics. An in situ model associated with powerful microscopy techniques is used for the oral biofilm analysis.

Dynamic computer-aided implant surgery (DCAIS) is a controlled implant surgical placement method performed without a surgical template using optical control. The real-time intraoperative control of movement and position of the surgical device simplifies the procedure and gives more freedom to the surgeon, providing similar precision as static navigation methods.

As technology develops and becomes more user-friendly, planning of operations and patient-specific surgical guides and fixation plates should be performed by the surgeon. We present a protocol for 3D planning of orthognathic skeletal movements and 3D planning and printing of patient-specific fixation plates and surgical guides.
