Device Safety Features

Device safety features are built-in design elements that reduce the risk of injury, misuse, malfunction, or hazardous operation in medical devices. They work through mechanisms such as alarms that signal abnormal conditions, interlocks that prevent unsafe actions, dose or pressure limits that restrict harmful output, and fail-safe controls that place equipment in a safer state when faults occur. These features support the safe use of infusion pumps, diagnostic instruments, surgical equipment, and monitoring systems across clinical settings. By helping detect errors and control hazards, they contribute to patient protection, reliable device performance, and safer healthcare workflows.

Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Among the many hazards present in the laboratory, electrical hazards are one of the most common we must be cognizant of since most of the laboratory equipment we use requires electricity for operation. Improper handling or operation of electrical devices might lead to electric shock with the potential risk of injury or even death. Electric sparks can lead to fire or explosion (since many flammable...

Visual Search for Features and Conjunctions

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University How do people find objects in cluttered visual scenes? Think, for example, of looking for keys on a messy desk, finding the ripest-looking fruit at the grocery store, locating your car when you can’t quite remember where you parked it, or finding an old friend at an airport exit gate. Clearly, an understanding of visual perception is going to play a role in any answers, and more specifically, an understanding of visual attention...

Survey Safety

Surveying near highways, rough terrain, or power lines involves significant risks. Working along highways is particularly dangerous and requires the use of warning signs and flagmen. It is safest to avoid working directly on roads and use offsets whenever possible. When highway work is unavoidable, it must follow all safety guidelines. Surveyors should wear bright clothing, such as orange reflective vests, to ensure visibility to motorists, coworkers, and hunters. In construction zones, wearing...
