Doppler Ultrasound Guidance

Doppler ultrasound guidance is a noninvasive imaging approach that combines real-time ultrasound with blood-flow assessment to support medical diagnosis and procedures. It works by detecting frequency shifts in echoes reflected from moving red blood cells, allowing clinicians to visualize vessels and estimate the direction and velocity of flow while positioning a needle or catheter. In medicine, this guidance helps identify arteries, veins, and abnormal circulation, improving vascular access and supporting procedures such as biopsies, drainage, and regional anesthesia. Its ability to provide immediate anatomical and hemodynamic information can enhance procedural precision and reduce injury to nearby structures.

Source: Giustetto, P., et. al., Non-invasive Parenchymal, Vascular and Metabolic High-frequency Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Rat Deep Brain Imaging. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)In this video, we demonstrate the use of high-frequency ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging to study the vasculature and hemoglobin content in the rat brain. This method provides detailed insights into cerebral perfusion and blood oxygenation, enabling non-invasive analysis of brain vascular structures and oxygen distribution.

Functional Imaging of Cerebral Blood Flow Using Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound

Source: Hage, B. D. et. al., Functional Transcranial Doppler Ultrasound for Monitoring Cerebral Blood Flow. J. Vis. Exp. (2021) This video demonstrates the use of Doppler ultrasound as a functional imaging tool to measure cerebral blood flow velocity, or CBFV in real time. It highlights how frequency shifts in the middle cerebral artery during tasks like breath-holding reveal changes in CBFV, offering insights into brain activity and vascular dynamics.

Several animal models of cerebral ischemia have been developed to simulate the human condition of stroke. This protocol describes the endothelin-1 (ET-1) induced middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model for ischemic stroke in rats. In addition, important considerations, advantages, and shortcomings of this model are discussed.
