Endovascular Exclusion

Endovascular exclusion is a minimally invasive medical technique that isolates an abnormal blood-filled vessel segment, most commonly an aneurysm, from circulation to reduce pressure and the risk of rupture. During the procedure, clinicians guide a catheter through the vasculature and deploy a covered stent graft across the affected region; the graft creates a new flow channel while its sealed ends prevent blood from entering the aneurysm sac. Used in vascular medicine for selected aortic and peripheral aneurysms, the approach can reduce surgical trauma and recovery time, while imaging follow-up assesses graft position, vessel patency, and persistent blood flow around the repair.

Histological and biochemical modifications after aneurysm endograft exclusion are still unclear. We describe a new model of endograft implantation on a murine aneurysm. Through thrombus analysis with and without persistant circulating blood stream interface, and new endovascular biomaterials evaluation, this model will help to better understand endovascular aneurysm exclusion pathobiology.

Mutual Exclusivity: How Children Learn the Meanings of Words

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville Humans are different from other animals in many ways, but perhaps the most important differentiating factor is their ability to use language. Other animals can communicate and even understand and use language in limited ways, but trying to teach human language to a chimp or a dog takes a great deal of time and effort. In contrast, young humans acquire their native language easily, and they learn linguistic...

The Pauli Exclusion Principle

The arrangement of electrons in the orbitals of an atom is called its electron configuration. We describe an electron configuration with a symbol that contains three pieces of information: The number of the principal quantum shell, n, The letter that designates the orbital type (the subshell, l), and A superscript number that designates the number of electrons in that particular subshell. For example, the notation 2p4 indicates four electrons in a p subshell (l = 1) with a principal...

Simulation of complex, high-risk procedures is critical to the education of medical trainees. A protocol for simulator-based endovascular neurosurgery training in a controlled academic environment is described. The protocol includes stepwise guidelines for trainees of varying levels, with a discussion of the advantages and limitations of this model.

Comprehensive Endovascular and Open Surgical Management of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations

Surgery is the gold standard for accessible arteriovenious malformations (AVMs), and pre-operative embolization can simplify this procedure. We describe our approach for staged endovascular embolization and open resection of AVMs, and provide a representative clinical example highlighting the advantages of a comprehensively trained neurovascular surgeon leading a multi-disciplinary clinical team.
