Follicular Atresia

Follicular atresia is the natural degeneration and resorption of ovarian follicles that do not mature to ovulate, making it a central process in reproductive physiology and medicine. It occurs when granulosa and theca cells lose survival support and undergo apoptosis, while changes in gonadotropin responsiveness, steroid production, and local ovarian signaling promote follicle breakdown. Atresia regulates the number of follicles that continue development during each reproductive cycle and contributes to ovarian reserve depletion over time. Understanding this process helps researchers assess infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, premature ovarian insufficiency, and the effects of aging or reproductive therapies on ovarian function.
