Handheld Lens

A handheld lens is a portable optical instrument that magnifies nearby objects, helping users see surface features that may be difficult to distinguish with the unaided eye. It typically uses a convex lens to bend and focus light, producing an enlarged virtual image when the object is positioned within the lens’s focal length; integrated illumination can improve visibility under variable conditions. In medicine, handheld lenses support visual examination of skin, wounds, tissue surfaces, and other small features during routine assessment or procedures. Their portability, low cost, and immediate use make them valuable in clinics, laboratories, and resource-limited settings, although magnification does not replace diagnostic testing.

We present an efficient method of studying lens accommodation by using a manual lens stretcher. The protocol mimics physiological accommodation by pulling the zonules connected around the lens capsule, thereby, stretching the lens.

Handheld Device for Saliva Pretreatment to Improve Cortisol Detection

This protocol describes a rapid saliva pretreatment method for improving cortisol detection. A handheld filtration device is used to remove mucins and other interfering substances while preserving the target analyte. The pretreated saliva exhibits improved capillary flow, thereby enabling more consistent and reproducible assay performance.

Lens Transplantation in Zebrafish and its Application in the Analysis of Eye Mutants

Lens development involves interactions with other tissues. Several zebrafish eye mutants are characterized by an abnormally small lens size. Here we demonstrate a lens transplantation experiment to determine whether this phenotype is due to intrinsic causes or defective interactions with tissues that surround the lens.

Developing Myopia in a Mouse Model Through Lens-Induced Defocusing

Source: Jiang, X., et al. Inducement and evaluation of a murine model of experimental myopia. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates a procedure for inducing myopia in a mouse through the installation of a custom lens frame. The frame is secured to the exposed skull with dental adhesive, and concave lenses are inserted to shift the focal point behind the retina. This setup stimulates eyeball elongation leading to myopia.
