Hepatic Hemodynamics

Hepatic hemodynamics is the study of blood flow, pressure, and vascular resistance within the liver, a system essential for metabolism, detoxification, and maintenance of portal circulation. The liver receives blood from both the portal vein and hepatic artery, which mix in sinusoids where low-pressure flow supports exchange between blood and hepatocytes; changes in portal flow can trigger the hepatic arterial buffer response, adjusting arterial inflow. In medicine, assessing hepatic hemodynamics helps explain portal hypertension, cirrhosis, and liver failure, while Doppler ultrasonography, pressure measurements, and vascular imaging guide diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment planning.

An optical system was developed to visualize hepatic microcirculation with FITC-labeled erythrocytes and to measure the partial pressure of oxygen in the microvessels with laser-assisted phosphorimetry. This method can be used to investigate physiological and pathological mechanisms by analyzing microvascular structure, diameter, blood flow velocity, and oxygen tension.
