Hyoid Excursion

Hyoid excursion is the displacement of the hyoid bone during actions such as swallowing, reflecting coordinated movement within the upper airway and digestive tract. During the pharyngeal phase of swallowing, contraction of the suprahyoid muscles moves the hyoid primarily upward and forward, helping elevate the larynx and assist opening of the upper esophageal sphincter. In medicine, measuring hyoid excursion supports evaluation of swallowing biomechanics and dysphagia, including assessment with videofluoroscopic imaging or other motion-tracking methods. Its pattern and magnitude can provide clinically relevant information about airway protection, bolus passage, and neuromuscular function.

The Hyoid Bone

2023

The hyoid bone is a small U-shaped bone located in the upper neck at the level of the inferior mandible, with its tips pointing posteriorly. It does not directly articulate with any other bone in the body. The hyoid acts as the attachment site for the tongue, the larynx, and the pharynx. It is held in position by a series of small muscles attached from above or below. These muscles help to move the hyoid up/down or forward/back in coordination with movements of the tongue, larynx, and pharynx...

Coordinate mapping is a method of documenting salient features of hyolaryngeal biomechanics in the pharyngeal phase of swallowing. This methodology uses image analysis software to record coordinates of anatomical landmarks. These coordinates are imported into an excel macro and translated into kinematic variables of interest useful in dysphagia research.

Noninvasive Intratracheal Intubation to Study the Pathology and Physiology of Mouse Lung

The use of a model that mimics the condition of lung diseases in humans is critical for studying the pathophysiology and/or etiology of a particular disease and for developing therapeutic intervention. Here a noninvasive intratracheal intubation method that can directly deliver exogenous materials to mouse lungs is presented.

2014

Magnetic tweezers, a powerful single-molecule manipulation technique, can be adapted for the direct measurements of the twist (using a configuration called freely-orbiting magnetic tweezers) and torque (using a configuration termed magnetic torque tweezers) in biological macromolecules. Guidelines for performing such measurements are given, including applications to the study of DNA and associated nucleo-protein filaments.
