Knee Extension

Knee extension is the movement that straightens the lower leg at the knee, an essential action for standing, walking, climbing, and maintaining lower-limb stability. It occurs primarily when the quadriceps femoris contracts and transmits force through the patella and patellar tendon to extend the tibia relative to the femur, while coordinated joint motion supports efficient load transfer. In medicine, assessing knee extension helps identify restricted range of motion, muscle weakness, pain, and injuries affecting the joint or surrounding tissues. Extension exercises and targeted rehabilitation can restore mobility, improve functional performance, and support recovery after knee surgery or trauma.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The knee is a hinged joint that connects the femur with the tibia. It is the largest joint in the body, and due to its location in the middle of the lower leg, it is subjected to a variety of traumatic and degenerative forces. Examination of the knee can be quite complex, owing to the fact it is an inherently unstable joint held together by various ligaments and supported by menisci, which act as shock absorbers and...

Proboscis extension response or PER is a taste behavior assay that has been used in flies as well as in honeybees. When the proboscis makes contact with an attractive substance, the fly extends its proboscis to consume the substance. Solutions of various sugars are very attractive to the fly.

Using a Macrophage Conditioned Medium to Promote Neuron Extensions

This video demonstrates an assay for promoting the growth of neuron projections known as neurite outgrowth using the macrophage-conditioned medium. Co-culture neurons and macrophages with cAMP and harvest the macrophage-derived conditioned medium. Growing the neurons with the conditioned medium promotes neurite outgrowths. These outgrowths are fluorescently labeled and visualized using a fluorescence microscope.
