Knee Flexion

Knee flexion is the bending movement that decreases the angle between the thigh and lower leg, enabling activities such as walking, sitting, climbing stairs, and squatting. It occurs primarily at the tibiofemoral joint as the hamstrings contract to draw the leg backward, with assistance from muscles including the gastrocnemius and sartorius; coordinated movement also depends on joint surfaces, ligaments, and surrounding soft tissues. In medicine, assessing knee flexion helps evaluate range of motion, muscle and ligament function, joint stiffness, and recovery after injury or surgery. Measurements of flexion can guide rehabilitation, track treatment outcomes, and identify movement limitations affecting mobility.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The knee is a hinged joint that connects the femur with the tibia. It is the largest joint in the body, and due to its location in the middle of the lower leg, it is subjected to a variety of traumatic and degenerative forces. Examination of the knee can be quite complex, owing to the fact it is an inherently unstable joint held together by various ligaments and supported by menisci, which act as shock absorbers and...

This protocol presents a cadaveric study of a wireless sensor used in medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty. The protocol includes the installation of an angle measuring device, standardized Oxford unicompartmental knee arthroplasty osteotomy, preliminary assessment of flexion-extension balance, and application of the sensor to measure flexion-extension gap pressure.

Here, we present a protocol to describe a minimally invasive technique for knee joint immobilization in a rat model. This reproducible protocol, basing on muscle-gap separation modus and the mini-incision skill, is suitable for studying the underlying molecular mechanism of acquired joint contracture.
