Latch Assessment Tool

The Latch Assessment Tool is a structured clinical instrument for evaluating breastfeeding effectiveness and identifying maternal or infant support needs. It rates five observed domains, including latch, audible swallowing, nipple type, maternal breast or nipple comfort, and the assistance required for positioning or holding the infant, with each domain scored from 0 to 2. The combined score provides a standardized snapshot of a feeding session and can help clinicians document progress, guide lactation counseling, and recognize difficulties that may affect milk transfer or breastfeeding continuation. Used in postpartum medicine, it supports consistent communication and individualized care.
