Mortality Outcome

Mortality outcome is a clinical or epidemiological measure that records death as an endpoint, helping assess disease severity, treatment effectiveness, and population health. Researchers define mortality by its timing and cause, then analyze outcomes using measures such as overall death rates, cause-specific mortality, survival time, or risk over a specified follow-up period; participants who remain alive may be censored in survival analyses. In medicine, mortality outcomes support clinical trials, disease surveillance, prognostic assessment, and comparisons between interventions or patient groups. Careful definition of the population, follow-up period, and cause of death improves interpretation and strengthens evidence for clinical and public health decisions.

Assessing Pathogenic Bacteria–Induced Mortality in C. elegans Larvae

Source: Anderson, Q. L., et al. A High-throughput, High-content, Liquid-based C. elegans Pathosystem. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)The video demonstrates a liquid-based assay where genetically modified C. elegans larvae are exposed to pathogenic bacteria in a microplate. Bacterial toxins secreted into the medium induce host stress and death. A fluorescent dye stains dead worms, allowing imaging-based quantification of mortality to assess genetic susceptibility or resistance.

Here we present a protocol for assessing seed survivorship, germination and dormancy under field conditions using buried, labeled seed strips and tetrazolium chloride (TZ) viability testing.

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes

Predicting Reaction Outcomes

2023

Kinetics describes the rate and path by which a reaction occurs. In contrast, thermodynamics deals with state functions and describes the properties, behavior, and components of a system. It is not concerned with the path taken by the process and cannot address the rate at which a reaction occurs. Although it does provide information about what can happen during a reaction process, it does not describe the detailed steps of what appears on an atomic or a molecular level. On the other hand,...
