Neuropsychological Performance Assessment

Neuropsychological Performance Assessment is a structured evaluation of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning through standardized tasks and clinical observation. It works by comparing an individual’s performance across domains such as attention, memory, language, executive function, and processing speed with expected patterns, helping clinicians identify strengths, functional difficulties, and changes over time. In medicine, these assessments support differential diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and monitoring of conditions that affect brain function, including neurological disease, injury, and developmental disorders, while also providing a baseline for evaluating recovery and everyday impact.

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel— University of Southern California Neuropsychology is a complex field, as it investigates how mental processes are executed in the brain—events that integrate concepts from biochemistry, biology, psychology, and neuroscience. Although the multidisciplinary nature of neuropsychology prepares young learners for a variety of careers, it also poses a challenge in that it forces students to study concepts outside of their comfort zone. The primary outcome measure in clinical trials for neuromuscular disorders is generally improved muscle function. Therefore, assessing the effect of potential therapeutic compounds on muscle performance pre clinically in mouse models is of great importance. We here describe several functional tests to address this.

(2019)This video demonstrates the use of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) to assess the degradation of exopolysaccharides (EPS) by human fecal microbiota. EPS fragments in fermentation supernatants are separated based on size and polarity using TLC, then visualized as colored bands following carbohydrate-specific staining.
