Peg Depth

Peg depth is the measured position of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube as it passes through the abdominal wall into the stomach, an important indicator of tube placement and function. Clinicians assess the external tube marking or skin-to-bumper distance and relate it to the position of the internal bumper, which should secure the stomach against the abdominal wall without excessive pressure. Monitoring peg depth helps detect tube migration, leakage, obstruction, or buried bumper syndrome and supports safe delivery of enteral nutrition and medications. Consistent depth assessment also assists clinical follow-up when a patient’s condition, body habitus, or tube position changes.
