Pregnant Mouse Exposure

Pregnant mouse exposure is an experimental approach in which pregnant mice encounter a defined chemical, drug, pathogen, environmental factor, or other treatment during gestation to evaluate effects on maternal health and developing offspring. Researchers control the exposure route, dose, timing, and duration, then assess how the agent reaches maternal tissues, crosses or affects the placenta, and alters fetal development or pregnancy outcomes. This model supports medicine and toxicology studies of developmental hazards, pharmacological safety, maternal-fetal interactions, and disease mechanisms. Measurements may include fetal growth, congenital abnormalities, survival, placental changes, and postnatal health, helping guide risk assessment and therapeutic research.

High-resolution ultrasound can help streamline experiments requiring timed-pregnant mice by determining the state of pregnancy, gestational age, and pregnancy losses. Presented here is a protocol to illustrate methods to assess mouse pregnancies as well as potential pitfalls (image artifacts) that may mimic pregnancy.
