Stereo Acuity

Stereo acuity is the ability to perceive fine differences in depth by combining the slightly different images received by the two eyes. The visual system compares these images and uses binocular disparity, the horizontal difference between corresponding features, to construct a three-dimensional representation of a scene; clinical tests often present targets with controlled disparities and measure the smallest detectable separation, reported in seconds of arc. In medicine, stereo acuity assessment helps evaluate binocular vision and detect disorders such as strabismus, amblyopia, and impaired visual development. Results can guide diagnosis, monitor treatment, and assess functional visual outcomes.
