Sural Nerve Sparing

Sural nerve sparing is a surgical principle and technique that preserves the sural nerve during procedures involving the lower leg, ankle, and foot, where injury can cause sensory loss, pain, or neuroma formation. Surgeons apply it by identifying the nerve’s course, carefully dissecting around it, and limiting traction, compression, heat, and accidental transection during exposure or repair. This approach is relevant to orthopedic, trauma, vascular, and reconstructive surgery, particularly when incisions or instruments approach the posterolateral ankle. Preserving nerve continuity and minimizing tissue trauma can reduce postoperative sensory complications and support safer, more predictable recovery.

The Spared Nerve Injury (SNI) Model of Induced Mechanical Allodynia in Mice

The Spared Nerve Injury animal model is described here as a mouse model of peripheral neuropathic pain following partial denervation of the sciatic nerve by lesioning the tibial and common peroneal nerve branches, leaving the remaining sural nerve intact. Behavioral modification resulting from mechanical allodynia is quantified by von Frey filaments.

Traditional modeling of partial bladder outlet obstruction in rodents is fraught with animal mortality. A denervation injury from dissection around the proximal urethra and bladder neck is also of major concern. We developed and evaluated a safe and reliable mid-urethral obstruction model, avoiding the shortcomings of the traditional model.

Spare Receptors

2023

Some receptors remain unoccupied even when an agonist produces a maximal response. Such empty ones are called spare receptors. In presence of spare receptors the maximum effect of an agonist drug is achieved with fewer than 100% of the receptors being occupied. To determine the presence of spare receptors, scientists often compare the concentration of the drug needed to produce 50% of the maximum effect (EC50) with the concentration of the drug needed to occupy 50% of the receptors (Kd). If the...
