Tubal Patency

Tubal patency refers to whether the fallopian tubes are open enough to allow sperm passage, fertilization, and transport of a fertilized egg toward the uterus, making it an important factor in evaluating fertility. Clinicians assess it by introducing a contrast medium, saline, or dye and observing its passage through the tubes with radiography, ultrasound, or laparoscopy; blockage may result from infection, inflammation, endometriosis, or prior surgery. In medicine, patency testing helps investigate infertility, guide decisions about assisted reproductive treatment, and identify tubal abnormalities that may increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

Utero-tubal embryo transfer uses the utero-tubal junction as a barrier to prevent the embryo outflow that may occur when performing uterine transfer. Vasectomized males are required to obtain pseudopregnant recipients for embryo transfer. Both techniques are discussed.

Papanicolaou Staining: A Technique to Visualize the Cytological Features of Tubal Cells

We present a protocol to efficiently evaluate aneurysm perfusion and vessel patency of sidewall aneurysm in rats and rabbits, using fluorescein-based fluorescence video angiography (FVA). With a positive predictive value of 92.6%, it is a simple but very effective and economical method with no special equipment required.
