Vagus-sparing Surgery

Vagus-sparing surgery is an operative approach that treats disease while preserving the vagus nerve and its branches, which provide essential parasympathetic control to thoracic and abdominal organs. Surgeons achieve this by carefully identifying the anterior and posterior vagal trunks, dissecting around rather than through neural tissue, and limiting traction, cautery, or transection near these pathways. In procedures involving the esophagus, stomach, or nearby structures, preserving vagal innervation may help maintain gastric emptying, digestive function, and autonomic regulation. This approach supports more physiologic recovery and provides a framework for refining minimally invasive techniques and evaluating postoperative functional outcomes.

Source: Badran, B. W., et al. Laboratory Administration of Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS): Technique, Targeting, and Considerations. J. Vis. Exp. (2019)This video demonstrates transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS), a noninvasive method for modulating brain activity. Electrodes are placed on the anterior wall of the outer ear canal and the tragus, targeting the auricular branch of the vagus nerve (ABVN). When stimulated, the resulting nerve impulse...

Vagus Nerve Stimulation in a Rat Model to Reduce Freezing Behavior

Source: Childs, J. E., et al. Vagus Nerve Stimulation as a Tool to Induce Plasticity in Pathways Relevant for Extinction Learning. J. Vis. Exp. (2015)This video demonstrates the method of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in a rat model to reduce freezing behavior. Fear-conditioned rats receive VNS during sound re-exposure, leading to reduced freezing and revealing its therapeutic potential.
