Video-assisted Thoracic Surgery

Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive technique that allows surgeons to diagnose and treat diseases within the chest through small incisions rather than a large thoracotomy. Under general anesthesia, the surgeon inserts a thoracoscope equipped with a camera and passes specialized instruments between the ribs, often using single-lung ventilation to improve access and visibility. VATS supports procedures such as lung biopsy, lobectomy, pleural surgery, and treatment of mediastinal conditions. Compared with open surgery, it can reduce postoperative pain, shorten hospital stays, and promote faster recovery while providing valuable diagnostic and therapeutic options in modern thoracic medicine.
