Writing Reflex Test

The Writing Reflex Test, commonly referred to as the righting reflex test, is a neurological assessment of an individual’s ability to restore normal body orientation after being placed in an abnormal position. The response requires sensory information from vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems to be integrated with coordinated motor commands that initiate corrective movements. Clinicians and researchers assess whether the response is present, delayed, absent, or asymmetric, providing insight into nervous system function. In medicine and experimental studies, the test supports evaluation of developmental maturity, neurological injury, motor impairment, and the effects of drugs or anesthesia under standardized conditions.

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

Reflex Activity

2024

A reflex activity is an automatic, involuntary response to specific stimuli. It is a part of our survival mechanism, designed to protect us from potential harm. For example, when a bright light suddenly shines into our eyes, we instinctively close them or look away. This is a simple reflex activity orchestrated by the nervous system without conscious thought or effort. A reflex exam is a diagnostic procedure performed by a healthcare professional to evaluate the functionality of a patient's...

The Micturition Reflex

2024

Urination, or micturition involves the coordination of the bladder's detrusor muscle and two sphincters to ensure controlled bladder emptying. The process begins with bladder filling, where the bladder wall stretches as urine accumulates. This stretching activates the urine storage reflex, mediated by the sacral spinal segments and the pontine storage center. Efferent sympathetic impulses stimulate the detrusor muscle to relax and the internal urethral sphincter to contract, facilitating urine...

Early Reflexes During Infancy

Early reflexes are automatic, involuntary responses to specific stimuli and provide information about neurological development during infancy. Some reflexes are present at birth or appear soon afterward. Known as primitive reflexes, they support early survival and adaptation.Primitive ReflexesPrimitive reflexes help newborns respond to their environment before voluntary motor control develops. The rooting reflex causes an infant to turn toward stimulation near the mouth, helping the infant...

Writing Bragg Gratings in Multicore Fibers

We describe a technique for inscribing identical fiber Bragg gratings into each core of a multicore fiber. This is achieved by introducing an additional surface into the optical path to mitigate lensing by the curved surface of the fiber cladding.
