Xgboost

XGBoost is a machine-learning method that builds accurate predictive models by combining many decision trees, making it valuable for analyzing complex medical data. It uses gradient boosting, in which trees are added sequentially to reduce the errors of earlier trees, while regularization, shrinkage, and subsampling help control overfitting. In medicine, XGBoost can support disease-risk prediction, patient classification, treatment-response modeling, and analysis of clinical or genomic variables. Its strong performance with structured data and ability to estimate feature importance make it useful for research and clinical decision-support development, although predictions require careful validation, interpretability assessment, and evaluation for bias.

This study evaluates prognostic systems for colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma patients using machine learning models and competing risk analyses. It identifies log odds of positive lymph nodes as a superior predictor compared to pN staging, demonstrating strong predictive performance and aiding clinical decision-making through robust survival prediction tools.
