Pain Trajectory Curves

Pain trajectory curves are graphical or statistical representations of how pain intensity, frequency, or interference changes over time, helping clinicians and researchers characterize recovery and disease progression. By collecting repeated patient-reported outcomes and applying longitudinal analysis, these curves reveal patterns such as rapid improvement, persistent pain, delayed resolution, or worsening symptoms. In medicine, pain trajectory curves support prognosis, identify patients at risk for chronic pain, and evaluate responses to surgery, medication, rehabilitation, or other interventions. They also enable researchers to compare treatment groups, refine patient-centered care, and investigate factors that influence the transition from acute to persistent pain.

Orthogonal Trajectories

2026

Orthogonal trajectories describe the geometric relationship between two families of curves that intersect each other at right angles. One illustrative case involves a family of parabolas that open sideways along the x-axis. These curves share a common shape but differ by a scaling parameter, resulting in a set of curves that all pass through the origin and widen at different rates.Determining Orthogonal TrajectoriesTo identify the orthogonal trajectories for these parabolas, the first step...

We describe a protocol to observe and analyze cell rolling trajectories on asymmetric receptor-patterned substrates. The resulting data are useful for engineering of receptor-patterned substrates for label-free cell separation and analysis.

Urinary Bladder Distention Evoked Visceromotor Responses as a Model for Bladder Pain in Mice

2014

Approximately 3-8 million people in the United States suffer from interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a debilitating condition characterized in part by pelvic pain. In order to study nervous system contributions to the condition, a physiological model of urinary bladder pain is used in mice and rats.

Human pain models are valuable tools used to assess the analgesic potential of novel compounds and predict their clinical efficacy, especially when used in an integrated manner. Although implementation of these models is complex, with proper execution, the pain models described in this protocol can provide predictive and reliable results.
