Age Related Changes

Age-related changes are gradual alterations in structure and function that occur across the nervous system over the lifespan, making them central to understanding healthy aging and neurological disease. In the brain, changes in synaptic plasticity, neurotransmitter signaling, vascular support, and cellular maintenance can influence how neurons communicate, adapt, and recover from stress. These processes may affect memory, attention, sensory processing, movement, and sleep, although their timing and extent vary among individuals. Studying age-related changes in neuroscience helps distinguish typical aging from pathological decline and informs research on cognitive resilience, prevention strategies, and treatments for age-associated neurological disorders.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...

2025

Aging is a complex biological phenomenon influenced by various processes that affect cellular and systemic functions. Several prominent theories attempt to explain its mechanisms, highlighting cellular limitations, oxidative damage, and hormonal changes as central factors in aging. Cellular Clock Theory The cellular clock theory posits that the human lifespan is closely tied to the finite capacity of cells to divide, a phenomenon governed by telomeres, which are protective caps at the ends of...

Frailty Assessment in an Aging Mouse Model
