Bidirectional Interaction Testing

Bidirectional interaction testing is an analytical approach used to determine whether two neural systems influence one another, rather than assuming that communication flows in only one direction. In neuroscience, researchers test whether activity or perturbation in system A predicts a measurable change in system B while also evaluating the reverse relationship, often accounting for timing, baseline activity, and potential confounding factors. This framework helps characterize reciprocal signaling in neural circuits, brain-body pathways, and brain-computer interfaces. By distinguishing two-way interactions from simple correlation, it supports more precise models of effective connectivity, circuit function, and the mechanisms underlying behavior and neurological disorders.

Anxiety Testing

2023

Anxiety is a commonly observed behavioral disorder that stems from fear. It is described as increased restlessness, or unpleasant feelings of fear over anticipated events. Experimenters often use rodent models to better understand anxiety disorders in humans. They use different paradigms, like exposing rodents to bright spaces or loud sounds, which are known to induce fear. These tests combined with other interventions such as surgery or drug-administration may assist researchers in pinpointing...

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA Wood is a ubiquitous material that has been used in construction from the earliest times. Wood is a renewable, sustainable material with great aesthetic value. Today, there are probably more buildings constructed with wood than any other structural material. Many of these buildings are singlefamily residences, but many larger apartment buildings, as well as commercial and industrial buildings,...

Pilot Testing

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University In any experiment researchers have the challenge of creating experiences for participants that are consistent (i.e., reliable) and authentic (i.e., valid). Yet there are many ways to manipulate any one variable. For example, if you want participants to feel sad, you can have them think of their own sad memory, watch a sad video, or read a sad story. Researchers must find the best way to...
