Brain State Modulation

Brain state modulation is the intentional alteration of patterns of neural activity that shape states such as wakefulness, sleep, attention, arousal, and emotion. It occurs when sensory input, behavioral experience, neuromodulators, or targeted electrical, magnetic, and chemical interventions change communication across neural circuits, shifting network excitability and synchrony. In neuroscience, researchers use brain state modulation to investigate how brain-wide dynamics support cognition and behavior, while clinical applications aim to influence abnormal activity associated with neurological and psychiatric disorders. Studying these transitions also supports the development of more precise therapies, brain-computer interfaces, and methods for regulating performance and recovery.

Source: Lauer, S. M., et al. Visualization of Cortical Modules in Flattened Mammalian Cortices. J. Vis. Exp. (2018) This video demonstrates a method to visualize the cortical modules in flattened brain sections using histochemical staining. Pre-fixed sections are treated with a straining reagent that highlights active neural clusters, forming dark, high-contrast regions. After mounting and dehydration, cortical modules appear under a bright-field microscope as dark, patchy patterns.
