Dorsal Midline Incision

A dorsal midline incision is a surgical cut made along the back’s central axis to provide controlled access to underlying vertebral and neural structures, particularly the spinal cord. The procedure typically divides the skin and subcutaneous tissue along the midline, after which paraspinal muscles are separated or retracted laterally to expose the vertebrae while limiting unnecessary tissue disruption. In neuroscience, this approach supports laminectomy, spinal cord injections, electrode placement, and experimental models of neural injury or repair. Careful hemostasis, tissue handling, and layered closure help preserve anatomical landmarks, reduce postoperative complications, and improve the reliability of functional and behavioral outcomes.

Source: Cheah, M., et al. Dorsal Root Ganglion Injection and Dorsal Root Crush Injury as a Model for Sensory Axon Regeneration. J. Vis. Exp. (2017).This video demonstrates a step-by-step procedure for injecting a viral suspension into the dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) and inducing a controlled axonal injury via a dorsal root crush in an anesthetized rat. The protocol involves exposing the DRGs, delivering a growth-promoting viral vector to facilitate axonal regeneration, and severing axonal...

This protocol presents the use of a dorsal root ganglion (DRG) injection with a viral vector and a concurrent dorsal root crush injury in an adult rat as a model to study sensory axon regeneration. This model is suitable for investigating the use of gene therapy to promote sensory axon regeneration.

An in vivo imaging protocol to monitor primary sensory axons following dorsal root crush is described. The procedures utilize wide-field fluorescence microscopy and thy1-YFP transgenic mice, and permit repeated imaging of axon regeneration over 4 cm in the PNS and axon interactions with the interface of the CNS.

Metacarpal Small Incision for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel decompression with transverse carpal ligament transection is a very successful treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. The standard long-curved incision technique has become the best treatment for median nerve entrapment decompression. Here we introduce the metacarpal small incision carpal tunnel release (MSICTR) in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
