Ethanol Exposure Chamber

An ethanol exposure chamber is a controlled laboratory system that delivers ethanol vapor to study how alcohol exposure affects the nervous system. The chamber regulates vapor concentration, exposure duration, airflow, and environmental conditions, allowing researchers to produce consistent inhalation-based exposure while monitoring physiological or behavioral responses. In neuroscience, this method supports investigations of ethanol’s effects on brain function, neural development, neuroadaptation, dependence, and withdrawal-related behavior. By standardizing exposure across experimental groups, ethanol chambers help connect dose and exposure history with changes in neural circuits and behavior, strengthening studies of alcohol-related disorders and potential therapeutic interventions.

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

A nose-only inhalation toxicity chamber capable of testing inhalation toxicity at four different exposure concentrations was designed and validated for flow field uniformity and cross-contamination between the exposure ports for each concentration. Here, we present a protocol to confirm that the designed chamber is effective for inhalation toxicity testing.
