Experimental Protocol

An experimental protocol is a structured, reproducible plan that defines how a scientific investigation is designed, performed, and documented. In neuroscience, it coordinates procedures such as preparing biological samples, applying controlled stimuli or interventions, recording neural activity, and analyzing measurements under specified conditions, while incorporating controls and consistent timing to reduce variability. Well-designed protocols support reliable comparisons across experiments and laboratories, whether researchers study cellular signaling, sensory processing, behavior, or brain disease. They also improve transparency, enable method optimization, and help investigators interpret results by linking observed neural changes to defined experimental manipulations.

Experimental Protocol to Investigate Particle Aerosolization of a Product Under Abrasion and Under Environmental Weathering

2016

In this article, an experimental protocol to investigate particle aerosolization of a product under abrasion and under environmental weathering is presented. Results on the emission of engineered nanomaterials, in the form of aerosols are presented. The specific experimental set-up is described in detail.

A Within-subjects Experimental Protocol to Assess the Effects of Social Input on Infant EEG

This novel protocol is designed to assess the neural bases of social interaction in infants. The paradigm is designed to tease apart how various social inputs such as language, joint attention, and face-to-face interaction relate to infant neural activation. Infant EEG power is recorded during both social and nonsocial conditions.

Experimental Protocol for Manipulating Plant-induced Soil Heterogeneity

Understanding the role of environmental heterogeneity in species coexistence has typically focused on types of heterogeneity that are extrinsic to the community’s species composition. We provide novel detailed methods for creating soil heterogeneity treatments using soils subject to plant-soil feedback conditioning, or heterogeneity intrinsic to the community composition.

Protocols for Vaginal Inoculation and Sample Collection in the Experimental Mouse Model of Candida vaginitis

2011

Key techniques to be used in the evaluation of Candida vaginitis in an experimental animal model are described. The methods will allow rapid collection of vaginal specimens and lymphocytes from draining lumbar lymph nodes. These techniques could give rise to mouse models of other diseases in the female lower genital tract.
