Extracellular Neural Recording

Extracellular neural recording is a technique for measuring electrical signals produced by neurons from outside their cell membranes, providing a noninvasive view of neural activity. Electrodes positioned near neurons detect changes in the surrounding extracellular voltage, including action potentials from individual cells and slower local field potentials generated by populations of neurons, while signal processing separates and interprets these patterns. In neuroscience, the method supports studies of neural coding, sensory processing, network dynamics, and brain disorders. It is also used in brain-computer interfaces and experimental neuroprosthetics, where recorded activity can be analyzed to infer movement, perception, or cognitive state.

We previously developed a technique for implanting tetrode wires into the central complex of cockroach brains that allows us to monitor activity in individual units of tethered cockroaches. Here we present a modified version of that technique that allows us to also record brain activity in freely moving insects.

The design and assembly of microdrives for in vivo electrophysiological recordings of brain signals from the mouse is described. By attaching microelectrode bundles to sturdy driveable carriers, these techniques allow for long-term and stable neural recordings. The lightweight design allows for unrestricted behavioral performance by the animal following drive implantation.
