Microtome Blades

Microtome blades are precision cutting tools used to produce thin, uniform sections from tissue or other specimens embedded in a supporting medium, enabling microscopic examination. During sectioning, a sharp blade advances across the specimen at a controlled thickness, while the microtome converts the cutting motion into ribbons or individual slices for mounting on slides. In neuroscience, these sections reveal the organization of brain and spinal cord tissue, including neurons, axonal pathways, and pathological changes, after staining or labeling. Blade sharpness, geometry, and compatibility with materials such as paraffin or frozen tissue influence section quality and the reliability of histological and immunohistochemical analyses.

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC A propeller is a twisted airfoil, where the angle of the chord changes with respect to the location, along the radial station, as shown in Figure 1. Propellers are widely used in aircraft and watercraft propulsion systems thereby necessitating detailed characterizations of propellers to design high performance vehicles. Figure 1. Chord, thickness, and pitch at a radial station. One of...

Here, we describe the preparation of viable ventricular slices from adult mice and their use for sharp electrode action potential recordings. These multicellular preparations provide a preserved in vivo like tissue structure, which makes them a valuable model for electrophysiological and pharmacological studies in vitro.
