Olfactometer Setup

An olfactometer setup is a laboratory system that delivers controlled, precisely timed odor stimuli for studying how organisms detect and process smells. It typically mixes odorized and clean carrier air, then uses valves, tubing, and regulated airflow to present selected concentrations while limiting delays, leakage, and cross-contamination. In neuroscience, researchers use olfactometers during behavioral experiments and neural recordings to relate odor identity, intensity, and timing to activity in sensory and higher-order brain regions. Careful calibration and synchronization with stimulus presentation improve experimental reproducibility, enabling investigations of olfactory coding, perception, learning, memory, and the neural basis of odor-guided behavior.

Four-Way Olfactometer Assay: A Method to Assess Odorant-Cued Responses in Drosophila

2023

Fruit flies have a complex olfactory system, can discriminate hundreds of odorants, and use their sense of smell to direct behavioral decisions. This video describes the four-way olfactometer assay, a method to study olfactory behavioral responses in flies. The featured protocol clip shows how to handle test flies and what are critical steps while performing the assay.

A fast and inexpensive method for the behavioral determination of hearing parameters like hearing thresholds, hearing impairments or phantom perceptions (subjective tinnitus) is described. It uses pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response and can be easily implemented in a personal computer using a programmable AD/DA-converter and a piezo sensor.
