Pelvic Ganglion Dissection

Pelvic ganglion dissection is a neuroanatomical technique used to isolate and examine autonomic ganglia and their associated nerves within the pelvic region. Through careful removal of surrounding tissues and sequential tracing of nerve pathways, researchers can distinguish ganglion structure, connections, and relationships to pelvic organs while preserving key anatomical landmarks. In neuroscience, this preparation supports the study of peripheral autonomic circuits that regulate functions such as bladder, bowel, and reproductive activity. It also provides a foundation for investigating neuronal organization, signaling, development, and changes associated with injury or disease.

Pathophysiological changes in the cardiac autonomic nervous system, especially in its sympathetic branch, contribute to the onset and maintenance of ventricular arrhythmias. In the present protocol, we show how to characterize murine stellate ganglia to improve the understanding of the underlying molecular and cellular processes.

The major pelvic ganglia contain parasympathetic and sympathetic neurons that innervate pelvic organs. Here we describe a dissection method and provide schematics for identification of these ganglia and their associated nerves. These methods can be applied to experimental manipulation of these ganglia in vivo or removal post-mortem for further study.

We demonstrate how to dissect and culture chick E4 statoacoustic ganglion and E6 spinal cord explants. Explants are cultured under serum-free conditions in 3D collagen gels for 24 hours. Neurite responsiveness is tested with growth factor-supplemented medium and with protein-coated beads.

Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT The pelvic exam can feel invasive to patients, so it is important to do everything possible to make patients feel comfortable and empowered, rather than vulnerable. Clinicians should be aware of how they are communicating, both verbally and nonverbally, and should give their patients...

Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT A bimanual exam is a thorough check of a patient's cervix, uterus, and ovaries. It can tell an experienced provider a great deal, as it may lead to the discovery of abnormalities, such as cysts, fibroids, or malignancies. However, it's useful even in the absence of such findings, as it...
