Slc17a9

Slc17a9 is a gene that encodes the vesicular nucleotide transporter (VNUT), a membrane protein that loads ATP and other nucleotides into secretory vesicles for regulated release. VNUT uses an electrochemical proton gradient generated by vesicular ATPases to concentrate nucleotides inside vesicles, enabling their exocytosis in response to cellular stimulation. In neuroscience, Slc17a9 supports purinergic signaling, through which extracellular ATP activates P2 receptors on neurons and glial cells. Studying its expression and transport activity helps clarify how ATP contributes to neurotransmission, intercellular communication, neuroinflammation, and the development of potential targets for neurological disease research.
