Status Seeking Behavior

Status-seeking behavior is the pursuit of social standing, respect, influence, or recognition within a group, a pattern that shapes motivation and social decision-making. In neuroscience, it emerges when the brain evaluates social cues and compares one’s position with others, engaging reward and valuation systems that can reinforce actions after approval, prestige, or improved rank; rejection or loss of standing can instead generate threat-related responses. Researchers study this behavior through social-choice tasks, reputation feedback, and measures of neural activity and physiology. Understanding its mechanisms helps explain cooperation, competition, leadership, group hierarchy, and disorders involving altered social motivation.

Optogenetic Induction of Long-Term Depression for Suppressing Narcotic-Seeking Behavior in Rats

Source: Rich, M. T., et al. Using Optogenetics to Reverse Neuroplasticity and Inhibit Cocaine Seeking in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2021)This video demonstrates the use of optogenetics to induce long-term depression (LTD) at medial geniculate nucleus to lateral amygdala (MGN-LA) synapses, weakening cue-induced narcotic-seeking behavior in a rat model. The rat, surgically implanted with optical fibers and virally transduced to express light-sensitive ion channels, undergoes optogenetic stimulation with...

In this protocol we describe a method of operant learning using sensory stimuli as a reinforcer in the mouse. It requires no prior training or food restriction, and it allows the study of motivated behavior without the use of a pharmacological or natural reinforcer such as food.

This conflict model is used to measure the impairment of inhibitory control after exposure to addictive drugs, or other factors that may influence inhibitory control. A sexual stimulus and an aversive obstacle are concurrently presented, thus male rats have to conquer the obstacle to approach the sexual reward.
