Transducer Fixation

Transducer fixation is the secure placement and stabilization of a transducer, a device that converts a biological or physical change into a measurable signal, within a neuroscience experiment. Reliable fixation preserves the sensor’s position and maintains consistent coupling with tissue or an experimental apparatus, allowing changes in pressure, movement, force, or electrical activity to produce interpretable outputs. Researchers use this approach when monitoring neural function, physiological responses, or behavior-linked mechanical events over time. Careful fixation reduces motion-related artifacts and signal variability, improving measurement accuracy, experimental reproducibility, and the validity of comparisons across animals, preparations, or recording sessions.

2025

This protocol describes an ultrasound transducer fixation system specifically designed for ultrasound stimulation of the spinal cord in awake mice. The method employs a fixation system to ensure accurate positioning of the ultrasound transducer while simultaneously allowing the experimental subjects to move freely without compromising the precision of stimulation.

Pressure Transducer: Calibration Using a Pitot-static Tube

Source: Shreyas Narsipur, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC Fluid pressure is an important flow characteristic that is required to determine the aerodynamics of a system. One of the oldest and still existing pressure measurement systems is the manometer due to its accuracy and simplicity of operation. The manometer is generally a U-shaped glass tube that is partially filled with liquid, as shown in Figure 1. The U-tube manometer requires no...

Two basic types of preparation are used to visualize specimens with a light microscope: wet mounts and fixed specimens. The simplest type of preparation is the wet mount, in which the specimen is placed in a drop of liquid on the slide. A liquid specimen can be directly deposited on the slide using a dropper. Solid specimens, such as skin scraping, can be placed on the slide before adding a drop of liquid to prepare the wet mount. Sometimes the liquid is simply water, but stains are often added...
