Vitelline Membrane Removal

Vitelline membrane removal is a laboratory procedure that strips the protective membrane surrounding an early embryo, exposing the developing organism for experimental access. In practice, researchers loosen or dissolve the membrane using mechanical manipulation or enzymatic treatment, then transfer the embryo to a controlled medium while minimizing damage to its tissues. This preparation is especially useful in neuroscience, where it supports live imaging of neural development, microinjection, drug exposure, and electrophysiological or behavioral studies. By improving access to the embryo, the technique helps researchers examine how neurons form, communicate, and respond to experimental conditions.
