Cardiovagal Function

Cardiovagal function is the parasympathetic control of the heart mediated primarily by the vagus nerve, helping regulate heart rate and cardiovascular responses to changing physiological demands. Vagal nerve activity releases acetylcholine at cardiac muscarinic M2 receptors, slowing sinoatrial node pacemaking and atrioventricular conduction; its moment-to-moment effects are commonly assessed through heart rate variability and reflex responses. In pharmacology, cardiovagal function provides a framework for understanding how drugs such as muscarinic agonists, antimuscarinic agents, beta-adrenergic antagonists, and other autonomic modulators alter cardiac activity. Measuring these effects supports drug development, safety assessment, and evaluation of autonomic dysfunction.

Functional Groups

2020

Functional groups are a group of atoms with characteristic properties, which when linked to the carbon skeleton of a molecule, alter the properties of that molecule. For example, the presence of certain functional groups on a molecule will make them hydrophilic, whereas others will make them hydrophobic. These functional groups are an indispensable part of organic chemistry and important components of biological molecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Each...

Described here is a rapid and effective procedure for functional reconstitution of purified wild-type and mutant CFTR protein that preserves activity for this chloride channel, which is defective in Cystic Fibrosis. Iodide efflux from reconstituted proteoliposomes mediated by CFTR allows studies of channel activity and the effects of small molecules.

William James, John Dewey, and Charles Sanders Peirce were instrumental in founding functional psychology, which draws heavily from Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. This theory suggests that individual traits, including behaviors, are adapted to their environments through natural selection. At the heart of functionalism is the concept of adaptation, meaning that a trait enhances an individual's chances of survival and reproduction. James envisioned psychology's role as...
