Focal Aware Seizures

Focal aware seizures are epileptic events that begin in a localized region of one cerebral hemisphere while the person remains conscious and aware of the episode. They result from abnormal, synchronized electrical activity in neuronal networks, which may produce motor, sensory, autonomic, emotional, or cognitive symptoms depending on the affected brain area. In pharmacology, these seizures provide a framework for understanding antiseizure medicines that reduce neuronal excitability by modulating voltage-gated sodium or calcium channels or enhancing inhibitory GABA signaling. Recognizing their preserved awareness and localized features supports accurate classification, medication selection, treatment monitoring, and investigation of seizure mechanisms.

Electroconvulsive Seizures in Rats and Fractionation of Their Hippocampi to Examine Seizure-induced Changes in Postsynaptic Density Proteins

2017

Electroconvulsive seizure (ECS) is an experimental animal model of electroconvulsive therapy for severe depression. ECS globally stimulates activity in the hippocampus, leading to synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. Here, we describe methods for ECS induction in rats and for subcellular fractionation of their hippocampi to examine seizure-induced changes in synaptic proteins.

Handling-Induced Seizures in a Mouse Model

This video demonstrates the induction of handling-induced seizures in a mouse infected with Theiler's Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus (TMEV). The infected mouse, which has hyperexcitable neurons, is exposed to external physical stimuli. This exposure causes stress, leading to abnormal electrical activity in the neurons, which results in seizures.

Behavioral Characterization of Pentylenetetrazole-induced Seizures: Moving Beyond the Racine Scale

2025

The protocol introduces an innovative method for analyzing and visualizing behaviors associated with pentylenetetrazole-induced seizures in mice. This approach extends beyond traditional Racine's scores, providing a more comprehensive evaluation of the diversity and temporal dynamics of ictal behaviors.

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

2025

Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Altered States of Awareness

2024

Altered states of consciousness represent significant deviations from one's normal mental state. These deviations can range from subtle changes in awareness to profound transformations in perception, thought processes, and sensory experiences. Altered states of consciousness can be triggered by various factors, including drug use, meditation, hypnosis, illness, or even intense fatigue. The ingestion of substances like stimulants or hallucinogens leads to chemical alterations in the brain that...
