Latent Autoimmune Diabetes

Latent autoimmune diabetes is a slowly progressive form of autoimmune diabetes that usually begins in adulthood and can initially resemble type 2 diabetes. Immune-mediated destruction of pancreatic beta cells reduces insulin production over time, while circulating autoantibodies, such as those against glutamic acid decarboxylase, can help distinguish it from nonautoimmune disease. In pharmacology, identifying latent autoimmune diabetes supports treatment that addresses declining endogenous insulin secretion, often requiring eventual insulin therapy rather than relying solely on glucose-lowering agents used for insulin resistance. Accurate classification can improve glycemic control, guide medication selection, and reduce delays in appropriate therapy.
