Tail Pressure Test

The tail pressure test is a behavioral assay that measures nociceptive sensitivity in laboratory animals by determining how much mechanical force produces a withdrawal response. During testing, calibrated pressure is gradually applied to the tail, and the withdrawal threshold or response latency is recorded before and after a pharmacological treatment. Increased tolerance to the pressure indicates analgesic activity, while changes in sensitivity can reveal effects on pain processing. In pharmacology, the assay supports screening and dose-response evaluation of opioid and nonopioid analgesics, comparison of drug efficacy, and investigation of mechanisms underlying mechanical nociception.

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Blood samples are useful for assessing biomarkers of physiological states or disease in vivo. Here we describe the methodology to sample blood from the lateral tail vein in the rat. This method provides rapid samples with minimal pain and invasiveness.

Murine Tail Lymphedema Model: An In Vivo Technique to Generate Sustained Lymphedema in Murine Tail

2025

This video describes an in vivo technique to generate murine tail lymphedema, an abnormal fluid accumulation in the interstitial tissue space leading to swelling in the tail. The model is applied to study mechanisms and therapy for lymphedema.
