Charge Oscillation

Charge oscillation is the periodic movement or redistribution of electric charge around an equilibrium state, producing a time-varying electric current or electric field. In a circuit, an inductor and capacitor exchange energy: capacitor electric-field energy drives current, while the inductor’s magnetic field resists changes in current and returns energy to the capacitor, creating oscillations whose frequency depends on inductance and capacitance. Related collective charge oscillations occur in plasmas and solids when displaced charge is pulled back by electric forces, generating characteristic frequencies. Studying these dynamics supports the analysis of resonant circuits, electromagnetic radiation, plasma behavior, and material properties.

Formal Charges

In some cases, there are seemingly more than one valid Lewis structures for molecules and polyatomic ions. The concept of formal charges can be used to help predict the most appropriate Lewis structure when more than one reasonable structure exists. Calculating Formal Charge The formal charge of an atom in a molecule is the hypothetical charge the atom would have if the electrons in the bonds are evenly distributed between the atoms. Alternatively, formal charge results when from the number...

Ions and Ionic Charges

In ordinary chemical reactions, the nucleus — which contains the protons and neutrons of each atom and thus identifies the element — remains unchanged. Electrons, however, can be added to atoms by transfer from other atoms, lost by transfer to other atoms, or shared with other atoms. The transfer and sharing of electrons among atoms govern the chemistry of the elements. During the formation of some compounds, atoms gain or lose electrons to form electrically charged particles called ions. When...

In Vitro Recording of Theta Oscillations in the Mouse Hippocampus

2025

This video demonstrates the recording of rhythmic neuronal network activity, also known as theta oscillations, in an isolated hippocampus. Electrodes are inserted into various layers and spatial positions to detect and analyze theta oscillations. This shows the unique neuronal compositions and the connectivity of the neuronal network across different layers of the hippocampus.

Forced Oscillations

When an oscillator is forced with a periodic driving force, the motion may seem chaotic. The motions of such oscillators are known as transients. After the transients die out, the oscillator reaches a steady state, where the motion is periodic, and the displacement is determined. Using the equations of force and motion, the amplitude of the driven oscillator is obtained. It depends on the natural and driving frequency. In the equation for amplitude, when the driving frequency is much smaller...

Oscillations In An LC Circuit

2026

An idealized LC circuit of zero resistance can oscillate without any source of emf by shifting the energy stored in the circuit between the electric and magnetic fields. In such an LC circuit, if the capacitor contains a charge q before the switch is closed, then all the energy of the circuit is initially stored in the electric field of the capacitor. This energy is given by When the switch is closed, the capacitor begins to discharge, producing a current in the circuit. The current, in turn,...
