Ground Fault Interrupter

A ground fault interrupter (GFI) is an electrical safety device that disconnects power when current leaks from a circuit, helping prevent electric shock and fire. It works by comparing the current flowing through the ungrounded and grounded conductors with a differential current transformer; under normal conditions, the currents balance, but an imbalance indicates that some current is traveling through an unintended path, such as a person or wet surface. An electronic or electromagnetic trip mechanism then opens the circuit rapidly. In physics and electrical engineering, GFIs demonstrate Kirchhoff’s current law and support safer designs in homes, laboratories, construction sites, and industrial systems.

Fault Types

When analyzing a single line-to-ground fault from phase A to ground at a three-phase bus, it is important to consider the fault impedance. This impedance is zero for a bolted fault, equal to the arc impedance for an arcing fault, and represents the total fault impedance for a transmission-line insulator flashover. To derive sequence and phase currents, fault conditions are translated from the phase domain to the sequence domain. For line-to-line faults occurring between phases B and C, the...

Task Interruption and Resumption Paradigm for Testing the Activation and Pursuit of an Abstract Thinking Goal

2017

This protocol was designed to test the activation and pursuit of cognitive goals (e.g., an abstract thinking goal) using the task interruption and resumption paradigm. The protocol is suitable for cognitive goals that are automatically pursued once activated, as the distraction procedure prevents goal pursuit during the interruption period.

Taping Over Different Ground Profiles

Taping over varying ground profiles requires careful adaptation to achieve accurate measurements. On smooth, level ground with minimal vegetation, the tape can rest directly on the ground. Here, the taping team, typically consisting of a head and a rear tapeman, coordinates their positions with clear communication. The rear tapeman holds the tape at the starting point and guides the head tapeman toward a range pole placed beyond the endpoint, using hand or voice signals to ensure alignment.On...

A Cognitive Paradigm to Investigate Interference in Working Memory by Distractions and Interruptions

2015

A novel cognitive paradigm is developed to elucidate behavioral and neural correlates of interference by to-be-ignored distractors versus interference by to-be-attended interruptors during a working memory task. In this manuscript, several variants of this paradigm are detailed, and data obtained with this paradigm in younger/older adult participants is reviewed.

This article outlines a protocol for the detection of one or more plasma and/or intracellular membrane proteins using Ground State Depletion (GSD) super-resolution microscopy in mammalian cells. Here, we discuss the benefits and considerations of using such approaches for the visualization and quantification of cellular proteins.
