Shockwave Reflection Avoidance

Shockwave reflection avoidance is the design and analysis of methods that reduce the return of pressure waves when a shock encounters a boundary, interface, or change in material properties. Reflection occurs because differences in acoustic impedance, density, pressure, and wave speed force part of the shock’s energy to reverse direction; gradual impedance transitions, angled surfaces, compliant or porous layers, and carefully shaped geometries can redirect, absorb, or weaken this energy. In physics, these principles help limit pressure amplification and reverberation in shock tubes, aerospace structures, protective barriers, and high-speed flow systems, improving measurement accuracy, structural safety, and control of intense transient loads.

Frustration and Conflict: Avoidance-Avoidance, Double-Approach Avoidance

2025

Avoidance-avoidance conflict refers to a psychological situation where a person must choose between two or more unpleasant alternatives. These conflicts are particularly stressful because neither option is desirable. This dilemma is often expressed in sayings like "caught between a rock and a hard place" or "between the devil and the deep blue sea." For instance, individuals who fear dental procedures may find themselves torn between enduring a painful toothache or facing the anxiety of...

Source: Derek Wilson, Asantha Cooray, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, School of Physical Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA Light travels at different speeds depending on the material through which it is propagating. When light travels from one material to another, it will either slow down or speed up. In order to conserve energy and momentum, the light must change the direction in which it propagates. This bending of light is known as refraction. Some fraction of the...

Achilles tendinopathy is a common musculoskeletal condition for which loading programs are currently the standard of care. However, the treatment protocols vary. We therefore propose a protocol for Achilles tendinopathy treatment using extracorporeal shockwave therapy.

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

Reflection of Waves

When a wave travels from one medium to another, it gets reflected at the boundary of the second medium. A common example of this is when a person yells at a distance from a cliff and hears the echo of their voice. The sound waves (longitudinal waves) traveling in the air are reflected from the bounding cliff. Similarly, flipping one end of a string whose other end is tied to a wall causes a pulse (transverse wave) to travel through the string, which gets reflected upon reaching the wall. In...
