Biculturalism

Biculturalism is the condition of participating in, identifying with, or integrating two cultural systems, making it an important topic in psychology because culture shapes identity, behavior, and social relationships. Bicultural individuals may develop an integrated cultural identity or shift between cultural frames, adapting language, values, communication styles, and self-concepts to different social contexts; this process is often called cultural frame switching. Psychological research examines how biculturalism affects belonging, acculturation, well-being, decision-making, and interactions across groups. These findings inform education, counseling, health care, and workplace practices by clarifying how cultural flexibility can support adaptation while tensions between cultural expectations may create stress.
