Child Cognitive Growth

Child cognitive growth is the development of thinking, memory, language, attention, and problem-solving abilities from infancy through adolescence, making it central to psychological research and education. These changes arise through the interaction of brain maturation, learning, experience, and social engagement, as children build increasingly complex mental representations and strategies. Psychologists assess cognitive growth through observation, developmental tasks, standardized measures, and studies of learning and behavior. Understanding these patterns helps identify typical development, recognize potential delays, design age-appropriate instruction, and guide interventions that support children’s learning, adaptive functioning, and long-term well-being.

Toddler and Preschool Child Exam

2023

Source: Heather Collette and Jaideep Talwalkar; Yale School of Medicine The key to a successful exam of a toddler or preschool-age child is building rapport and trust between them and the provider. Toddlers, in particular, may be wary of strangers and unwilling to cooperate with the physical exam, which is expected age-appropriate behavior. In order to provide good care and create a comfortable patient experience, clinicians need to tailor their interaction to the child's developmental stage.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

An Introduction to Cognition

2023

Cognition encompasses mental processes such as memory, perception, decision-making reasoning and language. Cognitive scientists are using a combination of behavioral and neuropsychological techniques to investigate the underlying neural substrates of cognition. They are interested in understanding how information is perceived, processed and how does it affect the final execution of behaviors. With this knowledge, researchers hope to develop new treatments for individuals with cognitive...

Online Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation of Dorsomedial and Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex in Cognition Decision Making, and Cognitive Dissonance

2025

This protocol presents a more precise and effective method of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the dorsolateral and dorsomedial prefrontal cortices during an experimental task using neuronavigation and robotic systems. Based on the results, crucial implications are suggested for future online stimulation research.
