Functional Impairment

Functional impairment is the extent to which psychological symptoms disrupt a person’s ability to manage daily activities, maintain relationships, learn, work, or participate in society. In psychology, clinicians assess impairment by examining how changes in cognition, emotion, motivation, or behavior affect functioning across contexts, while considering developmental expectations and environmental demands. Functional impairment helps distinguish clinically significant difficulties from temporary distress, informs diagnosis and severity assessment, and guides treatment planning. Tracking changes in functioning over time also provides an important outcome measure, showing whether an intervention improves practical well-being in addition to reducing symptoms.

Thinking Too Much Impairs Decision-Making

2023

Source: Peter Mende-Siedlecki & Jay Van Bavel—New York University When we are considering a tough choice between two or more attractive options, we often end up actively weighing the pros and cons of each alternative. By reflecting on their advantages and disadvantages, we attempt to fit a complex, subjective decision into an orderly set of criteria. However, research in psychology suggests that this sort of introspective approach might not always yield the most optimal outcomes.1 In other...

Evaluating Motor Impairment in C. elegans Models Using the Radial Locomotion Assay

2025

This video demonstrates the use of a radial locomotion assay to evaluate motor dysfunction in C. elegans expressing either wild-type or ALS-mutant human TDP-43 protein. Worms with varying levels of wild-type or mutant TDP-43 expression are allowed to crawl, and their movement is measured by the radial distance traveled from the central point on the assay plate. The assay distinguishes between mild, moderate, and severe motor impairments based on the distance traveled by the different C. elegans...

An Automated System for Sound Localization Testing in Hearing-Impaired Listeners

2026

This protocol introduces an automated sound localization testing system with precise loudspeaker placement and integrated response analysis, validated in normal-hearing participants and participants with single-sided deafness. It provides a reproducible method to assess spatial hearing and supports functional classification using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework.
