Genital Stage

The Genital Stage is the final phase of Sigmund Freud’s psychosexual development theory, beginning at puberty and emphasizing mature sexual interests and interpersonal relationships. Freud proposed that renewed libido, or psychic energy, becomes focused on the genitals as biological maturation reshapes earlier drives, while successful resolution of prior conflicts supports intimacy, cooperation, and productive social engagement. In psychology, the concept provides a historical framework for discussing adolescent development, adult sexuality, and personality formation. Although many details of Freud’s model lack strong empirical support, the Genital Stage remains relevant for understanding the origins and influence of psychoanalytic ideas in developmental and clinical psychology.
