Human Development

Human development is the lifelong process through which people undergo biological, cognitive, emotional, and social changes, making it central to understanding behavior and well-being. These changes arise through interactions among genetic maturation, brain development, learning, relationships, and environmental conditions, with developmental pathways shaped by both continuity and transition across infancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. In psychology, studying human development helps explain how abilities, identity, attachment, and mental health emerge over time. This knowledge informs education, parenting, clinical assessment, prevention programs, and interventions designed to support adaptive development across diverse life contexts.

Introduction to Human Development

2026

Human development is the scientific study of change and continuity across the lifespan. It includes gains and losses in physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning. Learning to walk, use language, and solve problems are examples of positive change. Reduced muscle strength, slower reaction times, and sensory decline in later life are examples of negative change. Development is commonly divided into several stages across the lifespan.Prenatal Development and ChildhoodThe prenatal stage...

Domains of Human Development

2026

Developmental scientists study human growth across three major domains: physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development. Although each domain describes a different aspect of development, they are closely connected. Changes in one domain can affect functioning in the other two, so human development reflects several interacting processes.Physical DevelopmentThe physical domain includes changes in the body and brain, sensory abilities, motor skills, and overall health. Physical conditions can...

Development of Human Microbiota

2026

The human microbiota begins developing at birth and undergoes continual change as we age. Infancy marks a critical period of microbial sensitivity, offering a “window of opportunity” during which beneficial microbes help mature the immune system. By age three, children typically develop a more stable and diverse microbial community. Newborns acquire microbes from their immediate environment; vaginal delivery favors maternal vaginal microbes, while cesarean births favor microbes from the skin...

Developing a Humanized Mouse Model with Human Liver Cells and Immune Cells

2025

This video demonstrates a method for generating a dual humanized mouse model with a human immune system and liver cells. It involves transplanting human liver cells and hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells into a transgenic immunodeficient mouse via intrasplenic injection, leading to engraftment of liver cells and development of human immune cells.

Development of a Multicellular Three-dimensional Organotypic Model of the Human Intestinal Mucosa Grown Under Microgravity

Cells growing in a three-dimensional (3-D) environment represent a marked improvement over cell cultivation in 2-D environments (e.g., flasks or dishes). Here we describe the development of a multicellular 3-D organotypic model of the human intestinal mucosa cultured under microgravity provided by rotating-wall-vessel (RWV) bioreactors.
