Memory Span Measurement

Memory span measurement is a psychological method for assessing how many items a person can briefly retain and reproduce in the correct order. In a typical task, participants hear or see sequences of digits, letters, words, or spatial locations and recall them immediately; sequence length increases until errors identify the individual’s span limit. Performance reflects short-term and working memory capacity, while also depending on attention, encoding strategies, and the complexity of the material. Researchers use memory span tasks to study cognitive development, aging, learning, and individual differences, and clinicians may include them in broader assessments of attention and memory.

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Why is it relatively hard to remember everything on a shopping list if it includes more than just a handful of items? Why is it possible to remember a phone number that one just heard, but not two or three phone numbers at once? Why is it difficult to remember names when several new people are introduced at the same time? The answer has to do with the fact that over short-durations people rely on a specialized memory system...

Working memory predicts a significant amount of variance for a variety of cognitive tasks, including speaking, reading, and writing. However, few tools are available to assess working memory in children. We present an innovative, computer-based battery that comprehensively assesses different components of working memory in school-age children.

This protocol describes a Drosophila learning and memory assay called courtship conditioning. This classic assay is based on a reduction of male courtship behavior after sexual rejection by a non-receptive premated female. This natural form of behavioral plasticity can be used to test learning, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
